Why is the commercial waste service changing?

Wagga Wagga City Council is committed to reducing waste to landfill.  The new commercial waste service encourages and supports commercial properties to separate their waste by introducing a recycling bin as part of the standard service.

Around one third of all waste to landfill is generated in the commercial sector and waste audits indicate there are opportunities to divert this waste through better waste management. The NSW Government has set targets for waste through the NSW Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy 2014-2021. By 2020, the aim is to achieve a recovery rate of 70 per cent, which simply means that by 2020 70 per cent of waste generated through commercial and industrial operations will be recycled or recovered for reuse. Currently the recovery rate in Wagga Wagga is around 40 per cent.

How much does the service cost?

Can I opt out of this commercial service?

Business owners can elect to opt out of Council's commercial waste service.  The property will not receive a waste collection service and the commercial waste service charge will be removed from property's rates.  To opt out, property owners should notify Council in writing and include the property address and owners name in the correspondence. Owners should direct correspondence to:

  • Wagga Wagga City Council, PO Box 20, Wagga Wagga NSW 2650; or
  • in person to the Customer Service Centre, cnr Baylis and Morrow streets, Wagga Wagga

Tenants must advise the property owner if they do not wish to utilise Council's commercial waste collection service so that the property owner can make representation on the tenants behalf.

I have already received new commercial bins, can I still opt out?

Yes.  Once the notification to opt out of Council's commercial waste service is received, arrangements will be made to remove the bins from the premises and the charge removed from the property's rates pro rata.  Please ensure bins remain empty of rubbish and are in a visible location in preparation for removal.

What happens to the old bins?

Old commercial bins will be recycled and turned into new plastic products including new bins!

Where new bins were delivered to commercial properties through the roll out of the new residential service in February and March 2018, these bins will be collected, cleaned and re-deployed for alternative use including public place bins or event bins.
